This week, the September issue of most fashion magazines have begun to hit stands. In the pages of the glossies, fall is already here. One major fashion trend for fall that is timeless and sure to make anyone stand out is a gorgeous red lip. It is a simple way to glam-up any look without looking gaudy, at least when done right.
The key is making sure you have a shade that works well with your skintone.
If you have duller skin, or more mature skin, stick to a shade of red that is less intense. More subdued shades are best because the brighter shades are going to detract glow from your skin. Another good tip is to use a lipstick that's moisturizing so that you don't age yourself with a dry finish.
For fair skin, like myself, I've found the best shades are the ones that have blue undertones. The colors compliment my coloring without clashing against the lightness of my skin. I like dark plums or wine colors. For more exotic looks, use an intense shade of berry. My favorite is Ruby Woo by MAC.
For fair skin that's a little more peachy, orangey reds look killer! They work with your skintone while drawing out those gorgeous creamy tones. One of my favorite orangey-reds is Heat Wave by NARS. It's red, but you're getting that gorgeous orange underneath.
Olive toned skin should stick to deep brown-reds. These are going to compliment.
Medium skin tones have the coloring for those deep, intense, true-reds. How about Nars in Jungle Red?
Sometimes, finding the right shade might not need rules. It sometimes takes trying on a few to find the one that you like the most! Don't be afraid to experiment, and confidence matters. If you aren't comfortable, try something else!
When wearing red lipstick, I always use lipliner to act as a primer. I line not only the shape of my lips, but fill in with the lip liner as well to act as a base. This helps keep the lisptick longer. Another trick is taking a matching power color and filling in over top after applying your lipstick. This will give an enhanced coloring!
